“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” — Jeremiah 1:5
On this day, join me in celebrating the birthday of the award-winning author of this blog, Dana Bicks. I’ll give him a day off from writing and instead share with you, readers, the true Christian meaning of birthdays.
After researching the history of birthdays in the Bible, I have a new-found respect for a holiday that most Christians celebrate annually. I quickly learned that celebrations of the day you were born originated from the pagan practice of astrology. Shocked?? Indeed, I am.
Thousands of years ago, men invented calendars and calculated birth dates, to the very hour, of kings, rulers and their successors by studying the stars. Thus, horoscopes were developed, a pagan practice. Saying “happy birthday” to friends and loved ones became society’s superstitious way of protecting them from evil spirits.
God’s calendar includes seven extra 30-day months every 19 years. This was to ensure that birth dates would vary from year to year throughout one’s lifetime, God’s intention. According to Scripture, birthdays are not a time to express joy, sing and expect gifts, simply because one is born into the world on a specific date. This day, if celebrated, denounces the worshipping of our Lord daily. God specifies that the day of our death is better than the day of our birth. He commands that the Easter crucifixion and human deaths be fully acknowledged and not birthdays.
So, how much does God abhor this personal holiday? Consider the fact that birthday celebrations are only mentioned three times in the entire Bible and each time something terrible occurred:
Genesis 40:1-23 – Pharaoh, the Egyptian king, celebrated his birthday by executing his chief baker. God never stopped this execution.
Matthew 14: 3-11 – Herod, on his birthday, ordered the beheading of John the Baptist. God never halted the death of this icon.
Job 1:4 – During the birthday party of Job’s oldest son, God allowed Satan to kill all 10 of Job’s children through what appears to be a tornado.
In fact, all major figures in the Bible never had their birth dates revealed – Abraham, Moses, King David, Jacob, Sarah, Noah, Abel, Samuel, Job, Esther, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Peter, Paul, James (Christ’s brother), or the apostles. Even the actual birth date of Jesus Christ goes unrecorded in the Bible!
So where did the birthday parties of today come from? They are principally from Germany where the birthday child receives gifts, chooses a menu, and receives a candle-ringed butter or jam cake.
But, there is a light at the end of this tunnel. God does shine on acknowledging people who have lived to a great age as they have great wisdom and experience to share with younger generations. In other words, celebrate a long life!
“Gray hair is a crown of splendor;
it is attained in the way of righteousness.”
Therefore, yes, I am celebrating your birthday today, Dana! God is the giver of life and He loves you! This is my special prayer for you:
On this day that we celebrate Dana’s birth, I pray for blessings and joy over him. You knew everything about Dana before his birth and You have a plan of prosperity and hope for his life! Let him feel confident and ready for the year ahead knowing that You have an order to his steps and a purpose for his life. Help him to find joy in every circumstance in life, knowing that You work all things out for good. I thank You for Dana, for loving him with unconditional love, and for the promises You have spoken over his life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
